On site, social, and email illustrations for the 2021 Niche Places to Live Rankings
Every year, Niche releases college, k-12, and places to live rankings. Every time we release rankings, I usually create new illustrations to go alongside the different categories. We were still experimenting with our illustration style in 2021, so I worked on a style that I thought was open, fun, calming, atmospheric, with a touch of humor. My process began with sketching out an illustration for each rankings category. After several variations, my team and I settled, and I was given the go ahead to create the twelve unique illustrations for that year’s rankings.
Summary of Assets Needed
For each rankings category, I needed to make the illustration work in several different crops sizes and placements. Although, we didn’t send out an email for every ranking example, I did need to make a crop for the mobile placement, the desktop placement, and a social share image for Facebook. Below are a few examples of this.

The image placements below were by far the trickiest crops to create. The artwork needed to fit into a narrowly horizontal placement and work with the current page design while still be interesting.
